Summary:
Agile is in the process of approaching its peak. Almost every organization is somewhere in the process of considering or adopting some sort of an agile method, and even governments try to go agile; something that only 10 years ago sounded like an oxymoron. However, there seems to be a feeling that something is amiss. Most organizations do not see significant improvements in their performance as a result of adopting agile methods, and too often organizations cannot show any difference in their performance between the before and after adopting agile. In an attempt to improve performance, new methods and flavours of agile emerge, with some of them introducing more aggressive and even careless practices. But what is next? Where are we going from here? Organizations need to start thinking not only what is the big thing, but also what is the right thing for them. Adopting agile practices on the project level, without ensuring organizational agility creates a friction between the agile project and the organizational gears – leading to gaps and performance problems. It is therefore time to think about what’s next: organizations need to maintain the bi-modal capability, allowing them to manage projects in any type of lifecycle approach, but there is also the need to think in a more integrated way: combining all the good from agile, project management, business analysis, and change management into one approach that really improves organizations’ performance. The integrated approach is not only about organizational agility, but it should also include elements of portfolio management, and mechanisms to introduce efficiencies and encourage critical thinking. What we know about people’s behaviours, leadership concepts, organizations and lifecycle approaches is enough for us to improve our performance. The search should not be for the next new thing, but rather for the best way to integrate all the knowledge that we already have. More methods, disciplined approaches. change management, bi-modal, project and change, business analysis, increasing pace in search for answers, looking for the next big thing, workforce skills, integration
